Why
do we have confessions?
Have you stayed away from 'mainline' or 'denominational'
churches because you think they put confessions in place of
the Bible? Then we encourage you to read these confessions
yourself and see whether this is the case. We are convinced
you will find that they confirm the authority of the Word
of God and only seek to explain what the Bible teaches.
If you prefer undenominational churches because you think
they only teach the basics of the Bible, then consider
this: what do those churches teach about Jesus Christ and
his work, how God's sovereignty and your faith fit
together, how the Holy Spirit works, and what the meaning
of the sacraments of baptism and communion is? As soon as
you summarize what you believe about these topics you have
a confession. If a church does not want to express what
they believe you may wonder whether the teaching will
change, depending on the preacher. The confessions also
serve as a way to safeguard that the teaching in the church
remains the same. They protect believers by clearly stating
what the Bible teaches.
