Jesus calls you to enter the kingdom
Jesus' parables were challenging: they called people to believe in him and to enter his kingdom. The many parables he told highlighted different aspects of the kingdom that he established on earth.
His parables were clear: he took images from daily life, powerful word pictures that illustrate his point and help you remember it.
But... there is always a twist. Something isn't quite right in the story. Something is exaggerated or ridiculous. And that's where you need to look to find the key to the meaning of the parable. That's the surprising thing about the kingdom.
I preached on these parables in the summer of 2004. I wrote these meditations based on the sermons for the radioprogram Voice of the Church for the Canadian and American Reformed Churches.
