Meet our pastor

Hi, I’m Pastor George Horner, serving Emmanuel Reformed Church

Seeing the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains from my kitchen window reminds me of my youth in Switzerland.  I spent my first decade in that beautiful country so rich in church history- the land of John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli, the best known of the Swiss pastors God used to reform the church in the 16th century under the banner: Sola Scriptura.  It was only later in life that I came to appreciate the Reformation which resulted in the establishment of Reformed churches whose hallmark was (and is!) the acknowledgment of the Scriptures as the sole authority for the church’s doctrine and practice.  By the grace of God, I found my only comfort in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to which the Scriptures testify and the Reformed churches proclaim.  My knowledge of the Christian faith was greatly aided by the Reformed confessions which set forth, in a systematic and accurate summary manner, the teachings of the Scriptures concerning God and the salvation unto eternal life of sinners by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, all to God’s glory.

I praise and thank the Lord that in His sovereign rule and care over His church He has preserved to this day the Reformation heritage of faithfully preaching and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ as God has entrusted it to the church by way of the completed and sufficient Scriptures.

To this day sinners are saved in no other way than by hearing and believing the gospel promises fulfilled in Jesus Christ and for that very purpose Emmanuel Reformed Church holds worship services every Sunday at 9:30am and 4pm at the intersection of Old Wadsworth and 103rd in Westminster Co.  Come and hear the gospel which is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.

Prior to this pastorate at Emmanuel Reformed Church, I served Reformed churches in Vermillion, South Dakota, Sutton, Nebraska, and Bakersfield California.  My wife of now almost 31 years, Mary Jo,  has been my faithful and loving helpmate throughout my ministry.  We were married when we first embarked on establishing a chiropractic practice out of which service the Lord called me into the ministry of the gospel via my enrolling and completing the M.Div degree at Mid-America Reformed Seminary.

Mary Jo and I have together have raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord the seven children with whom the Lord has blessed us so richly.

Two of them are now married and we get to enjoy, whenever that is feasible, our three ( soon to be four, Lord willing) grandchildren.  We have a son graduating from college this year and he’ll be commissioned to serve as an US Air Force officer.  Our youngest three are still living with us, and if you come visit Emmanuel church Jerusha, Lydia, and Josiah will have the privilege of meeting you, as will all the members of our inviting congregation.

Our family enjoys the great Colorado outdoors and my personal hobby is landscape photography, whereas Mary Jo enjoys “scrap-booking” my pictures.  But to my great culinary enjoyment, she loves to cook and practice hospitality.

Emmanuel Reformed Church is a loving Christian fellowship of about 40 members, and it is a congregation that seeks to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the community.

We invite you to come and worship with us and share in the fellowship of joy in Christ Jesus with which we have been blessed.

Our desire is that you too might find in the Jesus Christ we preach and teach and witness this only comfort we confess by the faith God has worked in us by His Holy Spirit through the gospel.  This is from the Heidelberg Catechism, a most beloved Reformation Confession we profess as a right summary of the Scriptural teachings and use to teach the Christian faith to our children:

What is thy only comfort in life and in death?

That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and redeemed me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me, that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from    my head; yea, that all things must work together for my salvation. Wherefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready henceforth to live unto Him.
